iPhone 18 Pro US units keep Qualcomm X80 — Apple's C2 modem ships everywhere else, stuck on mmWave

The dividing line for Apple's in-house modem runs across the Atlantic. A 630GB supply-chain breach at Tata Electronics in June leaked internal files showing the iPhone 18 Pro series will ship two logic boards: US part number 820-04340-06 carries a mmWave connector and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X80 (SDX80M); the rest-of-world part 820-04305-06 ships with Apple's in-house C2 modem and no mmWave support.
C2 is the first product out of the $1 billion Intel modem unit Apple bought in 2019 — seven years in the making, first surfaced in iPhone 16e, and iPhone 18 Pro is the moment it lands in the flagship. But C2 does not yet handle 5G mmWave. In the US, Verizon / AT&T / T-Mobile all rely on mmWave to add capacity in dense urban cells, and forcing C2 into US units would collide with FCC certification and carrier testing — so North America keeps paying Qualcomm.
Tata Electronics is the piece of Apple's India supply chain that handles iPhone assembly. AppleInsider on June 30 confirmed the leak also shifts the rear-camera sensor ID from 0x903 to 0x905, pointing at Sony's new IMX-905 and the long-rumored variable aperture. The A20 Pro chip, codenamed «Borneo», moves to WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module) packaging, splitting CPU / GPU / Neural Engine onto separate dies for the first time.
Apple did not comment on the breach. iPhone 18 Pro is due in September 2026, starting at $1,299.
If it works, C2 in the flagship crushes per-unit modem cost from Qualcomm's ~$30 down to Apple's marginal die cost, and at 200M units a year that is billions in licensing gone. If it doesn't, the US units still shipping SDX80M are a public confession — seven years in, $1 billion spent, and the mmWave layer is still Qualcomm's.
