Huawei's Global 5G Comeback After Six Years — Pura 90 Debuts in Kuala Lumpur July 14
TL;DR
Huawei returns to global 5G after six years with Pura 90s Pro and Pro Max, launching July 14 in Kuala Lumpur.
Huawei will hold its 'Now is Your Moment' flagship launch in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 14, unveiling the Pura 90s Pro and Pura 90s Pro Max for international markets. It is the first Huawei flagship sold outside China with 5G since the Mate 40 series in October 2020.
The last international Huawei 5G phone stopped at the Mate 40 generation. Washington added Huawei to the Entity List in May 2019, and TSMC halted Kirin chip production in September 2020 under US sanctions. Overseas variants have shipped 4G-only ever since — even the Pura 70 and Mate 60 lines, which restored 5G at home, remained 4G abroad. The gap runs roughly six years.
According to ithome and ZOL, engineering samples of the Pura 90 Pro Max international unit clocked download speeds above 1100Mbps, powered by the Kirin 9030S. Huawei Malaysia has opened pre-orders with a RM100 deposit — up to RM300 rebate on the Pura 90s Pro and up to RM400 on the Pro Max. Full pricing and specs are held for the July 14 event.
The Pura 90 launched in mainland China in March, built around the XMAGE camera stack and a liquid-glass chassis. Whether the international version keeps the same imaging module, ships with Google Play services, or regains 5G band certification in markets like the UK and Germany that once banned Huawei gear has not been addressed. Analyst Wang Yanhui wrote on Weibo that this is the most consequential overseas launch Huawei has staged in six years.
If it works, Southeast Asia becomes the pivot that rebuilds Huawei's overseas 5G shipments. If it doesn't, 1100Mbps was just a Kuala Lumpur demo.
