China's cyber ID at one year — 40M activated, 530 apps hooked in, all 12 top platforms on "one-tap login"

China's National Cyberspace ID program — jointly launched July 15, 2025 by the Ministry of Public Security, CAC, and four other ministries — published its one-year numbers via Sina Tech on July 10: 90 million app downloads, 40 million citizens with an activated ID, 280 million authentications performed, 530+ apps / mini-programs / websites integrated.

A year ago the numbers were 16 million downloads and 6 million activated. In 12 months, downloads grew 5.6× and activations grew 6.7× — "voluntary enrollment" at that adoption curve looks more like structural migration. 40 million out of 1.4 billion is 2.86% of the population; 530 platform integrations is more than a proof-of-concept.

The integration list tells you what this is. WeChat, QQ, Weibo, Taobao, JD, Pinduoduo, Baidu, Kuaishou, Meituan, Didi, Xiaohongshu, Douyin — the twelve largest daily-active Chinese internet platforms all support one-tap login via the cyber ID. Any new account or real-name refresh can "flash a code" instead of typing a national ID number and phone.

The original pitch: replace scattered real-name records with a single credential, so platforms never see your ID number. The regulation requires integrated services to receive only a webID and a yes/no verification result, and to store no raw identity data. On paper that's privacy improvement — no more twelve platforms each holding a copy of your ID card. In practice "who you are on the internet" now flows through a single authentication endpoint operated by MPS's technical center.

400+ regulators, local governments, SOEs, and major internet platforms are integrated. Eight laws explicitly encourage use; 25 regulatory documents have written it into specific clauses. From one app to 25 policy documents inside a year is a legalization curve faster than any consumer product would ever pull off.

International observers frame it the other way. The Hill calls it "a new era of digital control"; MERICS describes it as "a new tool for Beijing to tighten grip over online activity." Domestically it's positioned as privacy protection. Same tech, two narratives.

Win the bet, and activations pass 100 million within two years, cyber ID becomes the default for every real-name scenario, and China owns the world's largest unified digital identity system, retiring the 4G-era "one ID scan per platform" pattern for good. Lose it, and 280 million authentication logs concentrated in one place mean any data incident or policy tightening turns "one-tap convenience" into the public debate around "one-tap traceability."
