Chinese AI summer camps peddle "junior Musks" for RMB 30K — 90% are hokum, instructors sometimes ex-flight attendants

TL;DR

China's summer AI camps are ~90% "hokum" — a Beijing camp charges RMB 12,800 for "6 days to found an AI company" with instructors trained in weeks.

Summer AI camps became a 2026 education market hit in China, priced from a few thousand to tens of thousands of yuan. A Beijing agency launched an "AI Junior Future Program" with the slogan "become a product manager at 8, an investor at 13," and pitches "6 days to found an AI company"6 days and 5 nights, fully residential, RMB 12,800.

Insiders told China Newsweek that over 90% of AI camps on the market are "hokum". Many were quickly converted from outdoor camps or English camps, lacking AI technical DNA or formal qualifications, simply packaging visits to famous universities or companies as premium trips — walk-throughs, essentially. Instructors are often current university students trained in weeks, or ex-flight attendants who switched careers. Coursework covers little more than "use AI to generate PPTs."

Recruitment leans on parental anxiety about the AI era — "junior CEO" and "million-dollar funding" are the two most common hooks. The Beijing agency's staff told reporters: "Even many university students can't map out a business model canvas, and these kids can present one on stage after six days."

AI camps sit on the same track as earlier "quantum-mechanics training" and "brainwave-development bootcamps" — concept-first, packaging-driven, verification-expensive. The difference is that AI has real underlying demand (parental anxiety plus policy pushing "AI into schools"), so the leek harvest is thicker.

New Oriental, TAL, and Yuanfudao all launched AI-literacy tracks this year on the properly-priced side; but the fastest-eating segment remains these quickly-converted mid-tier agencies — at half the price of the majors and with far better narrative fit for anxious parents.
