CAAM Rushes to Clarify "EV Average Age 1.8 Years" — Stat Misread, Real Replacement Cycle Still 3-5 Years

TL;DR

CAAM clarifies "EV average vehicle age 1.8 years" ≠ replacement cycle or lifespan; actual replacement is 3–5 years.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) Aftermarket Branch published a clarification on July 14: the report's "average in-use vehicle age of 1.8 years" does not equal replacement cycle or average lifespan. "1.8 years" measures the average time since new-vehicle sale for existing NEV inventory as of end-2025 — it does not mean owners replace every 1.8 years, nor that vehicles only last 1.8 years.

This clarification was forced. Last week CAAM and He Jun Consulting jointly released the "2025 China Auto Aftermarket Annual Development Report," headline data: ICE passenger vehicles average 8.2 years, NEV passenger vehicles average 1.8 years. Finance and auto media collectively read this as "EVs are supersized phones — owners swap every two years," with Phoenix, Sina, TMTPost, and Titanium Media all leading with "swapping cars faster than phones" and "EVs as phones."

Statistical mechanics: NEV penetration rose from 5.4% in 2020 to 47% in 2025, so newly registered vehicles make up a disproportionate share of existing stock — 2025 retail was 12.809M units, 29% of the 43.97M existing base. Nearly 30% of NEVs on the road are under one year old, which mechanically drags "average vehicle age" down to 1.8 years. This is a numerator-denominator imbalance statistical artifact, not a "EVs die in two years" quality problem.

Actual replacement cycle in used-car transaction data: NEV replacement concentrates at 3–5 years, ICE 6–8 years. The gap exists but isn't the 4x+ implied by the headline — it's 1.5-2x.

Behind this technical-language clarification is a direct commercial driver — dealers and used-car merchants were freaked out by last week's coverage. If "replace every 1.8 years" got baked into procurement contracts, used-EV residual-value models would need a full rewrite. CAAM had to pull the numeric framing back to base.
