Musk promises X's entire codebase with 'no exceptions' | No code released yet
TL;DR
Musk promised to open all X code after review, but no date, repository, license, or code release exists yet.
Elon Musk made a rare promise on July 15 to open source all of X's code with 'no exceptions.' He wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that the platform would first complete a security-vulnerability review, then publish the entire codebase and invite third-party reviewers to confirm that the running system matches the public source.
Musk gave no release date, code repository, open-source license, or criteria for completing the security review. As of July 16, X had not published the full codebase he described. The reviewers, sampling method, and scope of access to the production system also remain unpublished.
X has previously disclosed only part of its systems. Crypto Briefing reported that the platform released source code for its 'For You' recommendation algorithm in 2025, exposing parts of the system used to rank and amplify posts. The new pledge expands the promised scope from a recommendation module to the entire social-media platform and adds verification against the running version.
Musk's post makes the security review a precondition and gives no completion deadline. It was published at 11:56 AM on July 15, 2026. He wrote: 'Trust through total transparency is the only thing that should be believed.'
