Anthropic tells companies not to stop AI over bills — an executive calls fixed cost caps dangerous
TL;DR
Anthropic says stopping AI over cost is wrong and recommends governance and routing instead of fixed caps.
Enterprise AI bills are rising, but Claude developer Anthropic is telling customers not to stop usage. Angela Jiang, head of product for Claude Platform, told Sequoia Capital's Training Data podcast that stopping AI use is “the wrong move,” and that Anthropic has seen customers respond that way to costs.
Jiang said spending at some companies had “erupted” after employees procured models through shadow IT. She said teams should first examine returns: if they ship faster or operate more efficiently, they should preserve the use case and then reduce the cost of each request.
Anthropic head of platform engineering Katelyn Lesse said handing a team a fixed cap and stopping at the limit is dangerous. Her examples ranged from running Opus all night on an expensive task to redesigning the strategy for the same outcome at lower cost. Business Insider also named model-routing services including Vercel.
Jiang said a router “within the Claude space” makes sense. She said companies should establish ROI and then reduce the token cost required for the same result. Anthropic announced no router product or launch date; the interview is available on YouTube.
