Gemini 3.5 Pro misses its June launch — coding retrain still falls short
TL;DR
Gemini 3.5 Pro missed its June window; Google retrained for coding but has not set a new date.
Google's flagship Gemini 3.5 Pro AI model is unusually months late, missing its planned June release. Sundar Pichai announced the June target at I/O in May. By July 16, Google would only say it was testing 3.5 Pro, an upgraded Flash model and other models with partners; it gave no new date.
Bloomberg reported after speaking with 10 current and former employees that Google updated training data in late June to improve coding, but the results still fell short of internal targets. Reuters confirmed that this was Bloomberg's reporting and quoted Google's statement. Neither outlet obtained model benchmarks, a parameter count or a revised public schedule.
The delay came as OpenAI and Anthropic released new models. Alphabet shares fell nearly 3% after the report. Google was also expanding AI coding internally: in April it said engineers had approved AI-generated code for 75% of new code, up from 50% reported the previous quarter.
Gemini 3.1 Pro, released in February, remains the current Pro version. Google's wording was only “currently testing.” As of July 16, Gemini 3.5 Pro had no public release date.
