NotebookLM becomes Gemini Notebook — 30 million users keep a standalone product

TL;DR

Google renames NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook; the 30M-user research product remains standalone.

Google has renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, covering more than 30 million users and 600,000 organizations. Google Labs VP Josh Woodward announced the change on July 16. The new name does not fold the product into the Gemini app: it remains a standalone research tool, and existing notebooks stay in place.

The brand changed as its entry points expanded. Users can already create and access notebooks inside the Gemini app with syncing to the standalone product. Google said notebooks will also come to AI Mode in Search. The service debuted as Project Tailwind at Google I/O 2023, making this its second name in three years.

A functional update gives every notebook a secure cloud computer, allowing Gemini to write and execute code for analysis grounded in user-provided sources. It is available now to Google AI Ultra users and Workspace customers with AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access; Pro access on the web will roll out over the coming weeks.

Google did not disclose Gemini Notebook's standalone revenue, paid-enterprise share or cloud-server quotas. As of July 16, the confirmed changes are the name, cross-app syncing and staged access to code execution.
