OpenRouter fields takeover interest from big tech | Its May Series B hit $1.3B — buyers are offering more

TL;DR

AI model-routing platform OpenRouter is fielding takeover interest above its ~$1.3B May valuation; it routes 400+ models for ~8M developers.

OpenRouter, the AI model-routing platform, has been approached by several large tech companies about a potential acquisition, at a valuation above the roughly $1.3 billion it reached in its May Series B. The Information reported the startup is discussing a sale to a bigger tech company at a steep premium to $1.3 billion.

OpenRouter's May Series B was led by Alphabet's CapitalG and raised $113 million at a post-money valuation of about $1.3 billion — more than double the $547 million it hit in its June 2025 Series A. Backers included NVIDIA's NVentures, ServiceNow, MongoDB, Snowflake and Databricks' venture arms, alongside existing investors Andreessen Horowitz and Menlo Ventures.

The platform now routes more than 400 models and serves about 8 million developers. Its weekly token volume grew from 5 trillion to 25 trillion in six months (roughly 100 trillion a month), and its annualized revenue reached about $50 million in early 2026. What it actually does is thin: forward a developer's request to the right model and take a cut.

A company that is just a middle layer has become the entry point that Google and NVIDIA both funded and big tech is lining up to buy. It set its valuation at $1.3 billion in May; two months later, buyers are offering more.
