Kimi K3 closes new consumer signups after 4 days as demand pins compute clusters

TL;DR

Moonshot AI paused new consumer subscriptions to Kimi K3 four days after launch, saying request volume in the last 48 hours has approached the ceiling of its current compute clusters. A dedicated coding plan is coming.

Moonshot AI said on July 20 it is pausing new consumer subscriptions to Kimi K3, reserving current compute for existing paying members. K3, released July 16, is the first open-weight system to approach the 3-trillion-parameter mark — a 2.8T-parameter mixture-of-experts model with a 1M-token context window and native vision. Requests in the past 48 hours have blown past the team's forecast and pushed against the ceiling of its current compute clusters.

K3 is built for coding and agent workloads, which loop back into the model repeatedly and cost multiples more inference than chat. Moonshot said it is racing to add capacity and will re-open signups in batches once the new compute lands. The company also flagged an upcoming split of the membership tiers, adding a dedicated coding plan so pricing tracks how customers actually use the model.

Behind it all sits Moonshot's fundraising and a mooted Hong Kong IPO. Free users notice nothing; new paying customers now queue. An open-weight model good enough to break your own API is the most awkward win in Chinese AI's global push.
