Apple pilots Live Notes at Genius Bar | AI transcribes customer repair conversations into the record

TL;DR

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports Apple is piloting Live Notes at select stores: Genius Bar staff record customer service sessions with an AI tool that transcribes and summarizes them into the internal repair log. Employees and customers must both opt in. Some staff worry the transcripts could later feed performance reviews.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports Apple is piloting Live Notes at a small number of stores: Genius Bar employees can use an AI tool to record their repair conversations with customers, auto-transcribing and summarizing them directly into the employee's work iPad as part of the repair record. The aim is to let staff focus on service rather than notetaking.

Recording requires opt-in from both employee and customer. Apple says raw recordings are not retained, managers cannot see the transcripts, and employees can review and edit the transcript and summary before saving the final version.

Some retail staff are not sold. They worry the tool could later be repurposed to monitor employees or feed performance reviews. Today's assurance that raw audio is not stored says nothing about tomorrow, when a policy change could pull the summaries into KPI dashboards. The pilot is limited to a handful of stores; Apple has not said whether it will expand.
