Z.AI completes 1GW AI datacenter fully on Chinese chips | 10,000+ chips per cluster, training GLM frontier models

TL;DR

Chinese AI firm Z.AI has completed a 1 GW AI datacenter, entirely powered by domestic Chinese chips, with clusters of over 10,000 chips each. It's used to train Z.AI's frontier GLM platform — the first top-tier Chinese lab to publicly run end-to-end training on domestic silicon.

Chinese AI firm Z.AI has completed a 1 gigawatt (GW) AI datacenter fully powered by domestic Chinese chips. Bloomberg cited people familiar on July 20 reporting the facility has started partial operations, used to train Z.AI's frontier GLM platform. 1 GW is enough to power roughly 750,000 households at any moment.

The sources said Z.AI has built or is operating multiple compute clusters, each with more than 10,000 chips. At that scale, Z.AI's datacenter becomes one of the largest server hubs any Chinese AI company has built on its own. Alibaba and China Telecom have long been considered the biggest builders of compute infrastructure — which requires billions in bulk high-end server buys plus stable power and water supply.

The sensitive part is "fully domestic silicon" — after the US further tightened advanced AI chip exports to China in 2026, Z.AI is the first among top-tier model labs to publicly complete an end-to-end training pipeline on Chinese chips. DeepSeek and Kimi still lean heavily on stockpiled Nvidia H100 / H800 inventory and rented compute.

Putting "1 GW + Chinese chips + GLM frontier models" in the same building is itself a public answer to the US chip ban.
