China Brands Take 34% of Europe's PHEV Market in June | One in Three Plug-In Hybrids Now Chinese, Front-Loading Before EU Tariffs

TL;DR

Dataforce: Chinese brands captured 34% of Europe's June 2026 PHEV market — BYD and Chery front-loading before EU tariffs land.

Dataforce data: Chinese brands took a 34% share of Europe's new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) market in June 2026 — meaning one in every three PHEVs sold was a Chinese brand. Overall new-car share was 11%, BEV 15%, PHEV alone stood out.

This is tariff arbitrage in motion. After the EU imposed countervailing duties on Chinese BEVs last year, Chinese OEMs shifted exports from BEV to PHEV — plug-ins were excluded from the sanction list at the time. BYD's Seal U DM-i, Chery Jaguar Land Rover's Freelander PHEV, and SAIC MG's HS PHEV have blanketed Europe since late last year. The EU is now assessing whether to extend tariffs to PHEVs. Chinese OEMs are essentially cramming shipments in before the window closes.

Reference points: 6 月 Chinese brands hit 15% in BEV and roughly flat in non-plug-in hybrids — PHEV alone is more than double. Bloomberg ran it as A1 Tuesday: 'One in three plug-in hybrids sold in Europe is now Chinese.' Sweden's June data was excluded due to summer institutional recess — real share may be revised higher.
