AMD × Anthropic Sign $10B+ MI450 Deal, AMD Invests Up to $5B | Nvidia Now Faces Real Compute Competition at 2GW Scale

TL;DR

AMD signed a tens-of-billions MI450 chip deal with Anthropic and is investing up to $5B in the startup — a direct challenge to Nvidia's AI hardware lead.

WSJ scoop: AMD and Anthropic signed an AI infrastructure deal worth tens of billions of dollars. Terms: Anthropic will buy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's next-gen Instinct MI450 chips starting H1 2027, and AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic as deployment milestones hit — AMD's first-ever investment in the AI startup.

Anthropic's compute strategy splits: some chips purchased outright for its own data centers, the rest secured via cloud providers and neoclouds. The deal also includes an engineering collaboration — Anthropic uses Claude to optimize AMD's ROCm software stack and accelerate Instinct GPU workload tuning.

The significance for AMD is bigger than the order size. Over the past six months, AMD has racked up OpenAI 6GW MI450, Meta, and Oracle orders; Google is also signaling AMD interest to hedge Nvidia. This deal pulls Anthropic into the AMD camp — combined with OpenAI, both frontier model labs are now placing MI450 orders. Nvidia's GB300 / Rubin face, for the first time, a competitor that can supply at 2GW scale with frontier-lab engineering optimization backing it.
