LG Energy Sues EVE Energy in US Over Five Battery Patents | Tabless Cylindrical Structure and Separator Tech in Play

TL;DR

Tulip Innovation, LG Energy Solution's patent pool manager, filed patent infringement suits in the US against China's EVE Energy over five cylindrical battery patents including tabless designs.

Tulip Innovation, the patent-pool manager handling LG Energy Solution's patents, filed an import limitation request and infringement lawsuits in the US against Chinese battery maker EVE Energy.

Five patents in play — four cylindrical battery technologies (including tabless structure) and one separator technology. These are widely used in the US power tool market. Tabless is the core structure Tesla's 4680 cell uses, and it's the transition path for cylindrical cells moving to higher C-rate and higher energy density.

Zooming out, this is LG Energy Solution's first real escalation in the China-Korea battery overseas market war. Over the past few years the competition among Korean and Chinese battery makers (CATL, BYD, EVE) played out on pack pricing, capacity, and customer relationships. Now Korean side reaches for patent enforcement — directly cutting EVE's SKU registration path in US power tools, energy storage, and low-voltage auxiliary markets. Once the ITC import limitation kicks in, there's no way back.
