Bot traffic crosses human traffic — a year earlier than Cloudflare predicted

TL;DR

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince: bot traffic crossed human traffic for the first time — 57.4% vs 42.6%. He had predicted 2027 only three months ago.

March SXSW: Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince said this would happen in 2027. June 3 on X: «Welp, much faster than I predicted. Bot traffic now exceeds human traffic for the first time.» Cloudflare Radar data: 57.4% bot, 42.6% human.

Why so fast: a human shopping might visit 5 sites; an AI agent doing the same task crawls 5,000. Every query delegated to AI is thousands of requests humans wouldn't have made. AI agent costs keep falling, deployment keeps scaling, traffic naturally explodes.

The AI agent layer sits on top of the old bot stratum. Pre-AI, bots were ~20% — mostly Google crawlers and spam. Now an entire AI agent layer is added on top, more frequent, more broadly distributed, mostly running on behalf of regular users.

Even Cloudflare suffers from this. Same week it announced this milestone, it also announced 20% layoffs and stock dropped 19%. AI traffic explodes server load but ad and subscription revenue doesn't follow — crawlers don't click ads.
