Nobel laureate John Jumper leaves DeepMind for Anthropic — Google's second AI defection in a week

TL;DR

John Jumper — Nobel laureate, AlphaFold lead, DeepMind VP — joins Anthropic. Less than a week after Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer left for OpenAI. Two crown jewels gone in seven days.

Google DeepMind VP and 2024 Nobel laureate in Chemistry, John Jumper, announced on June 19 that he is leaving for Anthropic, ending a nearly nine-year run at DeepMind. Less than a week after Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer jumped to OpenAI. Google's AI crown lost two jewels in seven days.

Jumper co-led AlphaFold, the system that broke a 50-year structural biology problem, now used by 200+ million researchers across 190 countries. He shared half the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis (the other half went to David Baker for computational protein design). Hassabis's internal farewell: «With AlphaFold, we changed the world and lit the way for AI to benefit humanity.»

The real story isn't the move but the motivation. Bloomberg sources say Jumper wasn't poached on compensation — he lost patience with «scale-first» and wanted to move toward Anthropic's emphasis on safety and mechanistic understanding. The person who scaled protein structure prediction publicly took the opposite side of the scaling debate.

Anthropic spent at least six months preparing: building an in-house wet lab, publishing biological agents research, signing strategic partnerships with the Allen Institute and HHMI. AI-for-Science infrastructure has effectively been tailored around Jumper's use case. FourWeekMBA: «the biggest signing of the decade.»

For Google, losing one VP isn't the problem — losing the brand that anchored DeepMind to «Nobel-tier science» is. Shazeer took Gemini's engineering muscle. Jumper takes DeepMind's narrative authority in the scientific world. One week, two cuts, both deep.
